Marea Rooftop

Rooftop restaurant and lounge, ~500 m²

Design Question

In a city built in the desert, how does a rooftop remember the sea?

Site & Context

The building is the roof of a west-facing tower looking out over the Gulf. Summer heat, sun and wind are the harshest facts of the site, so shade, wind protection and cooling are treated as primary inputs to the design rather than equipment added afterwards. The roof sits back from the shoreline but at a height that still turns toward the sea.

The cliché of the Dubai rooftop bar is gold, neon and a glittering skyline. Marea tries the opposite. Instead of imitating the sea with blue colour and wave motifs, it translates the logic of the tide into space. A tide line, set between a dark, wet sea-glass green and a dry shell white, runs as a horizontal datum across the wall, the bar front, the floor and the step, and finally returns in the brand itself. The terrace steps down in levels as the spatial equivalent of water going out and coming back.

Materials & Palette

The palette comes from what the sea leaves on the shore: terrazzo with crushed shell aggregate, sea-glass green, silver-weathered teak and oxidised copper. Each material also answers a weather constraint. Terrazzo absorbs heat, reeded glass cuts the wind without cutting the view, and copper patina does not break down in the sun but earns its age. Inside the salon a single new material enters, warm oiled oak, which relieves the outdoor terrazzo and absorbs sound.

Design Intent

Marea was designed not to imitate the sea, but to carry the rhythm of the tide into the space and the brand with the same line.
